Visit the Jain temple richly decorated with mirrors and Venetian glass mosaics, and the Kali temple. Also drive past the Howrah Bridge, one of the largest cantilever bridges in the world. 

In the evening proceed to experience the Renaissance Walk 

Kolkata is considered as the “Cultural capital” of India, thanks to her renaissance phase within the colonial period and the post-independence radical politics. This walk will take you on College Street, the most cerebral road in the city, where you will a find even a cigarette shop is selling books. You’d be walking to get familiarized with some of most celebrated historical educational institutions of India, with the nerve centers of radical students politics, with India’s most happening rendezvous of the intellectuals, with almost extinct letter presses. Finally visit the largest open air book market in the world.

28 January - Darjeeling Sightseeing tour

Visit to Tiger Hill, 13kms from Darjeeling, is famous for its splendid sights and Himalayan Range like Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest. Experience the horizon changing colours just before sunrise and then the entire Himalayan range turn golden. It is truly a majestic sight. 

Post enjoy Toy train ride up-to Ghoom Monastery, The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway harks back to simpler and more romantic times. Immortalised on the silver screen, the Toy Train ride in Darjeeling is an experience that you must not miss and Ghoom monastery, housing an enormous statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the Ghoom Monastery is the oldest monastery in the region and belongs to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhism. It is an oasis of calm located away from the din and bustle of Darjeeling later drive back to hotel.  

In the afternoon visit Himalayan Mountaineering Institute / Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological. Explore the different exhibits of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute that was founded in 1954 in honour of Tenzing Norgay and to encourage mountaineering as an organised sport in India.  

Wander through the Mall, shop for local crafts and antiques along the way, drop in to the famous Das Studios for a peek at their collection of old black and white photographs of the area, and stop for a cup of tea or coffee at Keventers or Glenary’s, two famous old cafeterias on the Mall. 

29 January - Darjeeling Sightseeing tour

Visit to a Tea Factory to see how the leaf is brought in from the fields, weighed, and then taken through the processes of withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and sorting. This will be followed by a tea tasting session with a range of black, green, oolong and white teas, to discover the differences in aroma, flavour and appearance of tea manufactured in different ways and at during different times of the year. Walk (or drive) through the tea fields with a property guide for an insight into how the tea bush is grown and looked after. Interact with the tea picker ladies and learn how to pluck the “two leaves and a bud” that is later manufactured into the tea. 

During the winter season, learn about the different types of pruning that is undertaken to increase the yield of the coming season. Interact with the estate workers as you move from one part of the estate to another. Enjoy the variety of bird life, butterflies and flora that add to the diverse landscape that makes up a tea estate.

Meet a veteran Gurkha Soldier of the British Army   

Meet the son of veteran soldier of the Gorkha Regiment of the British Army that was famous for their fearlessness and valour in the face of the enemies. Their signature weapon, the forward-curving Khukhri is deeply interlinked with their culture ethos and also forms the emblem of the regiment. The Gorkha War Museum is in his residence only covering 3 rooms, displaying the Ex-Service man’s dress, shoes and other equipment which were used by British Army/Indian Army both, few equipment which were used during world war II, 1971 war between India-Pakistan, article about the Ex-Soldiers, medal etc. 

 

Meet Mr Jamling Tenzing Norgay 

Meet Mr Jamling Tenzing Norgay, the son of world famous Tenzing Norgay who climbed Mount Everest for the first time along with Sir Edmund Hillary. Enjoy interacting with him and his family over tea and listen to their amazing stories about Sagarmatha.
