Today Arrowtown has around 70 buildings and features left from the gold rush era. After the gold ran out, Arrowtown became a farm service town and in the 1950’s major restoration took place on the historic cottages. The full history of the town can be seen at the district museum on the main street.

05 December - Small Group Milford Sound Day Tour including packed picnic lunch

Your Adventure Begins

Start your day by meeting our friendly local guide at your Queenstown accommodation or nearby. You’ll travel in style in a premium glass-roof top Mercedes van designed for touring with only 16 seats onboard. The first leg of our journey to Milford Sound transports you from Queenstown through the picturesque Southland farming country and the charming town of Te Anau, where we’ll make a brief stop by the lakeside for refreshments.

Welcome to the Fiordland National Park

From here, we welcome you to the Fiordland National Park and the renowned Milford Road. This corridor to the fjord unveils a different side of New Zealand, with its majestic mountains, winding rivers, and the cheeky Kea bird. Throughout the journey, your guide will make multiple stops for photo opportunities, and short walks, and will entertain you with fascinating local facts and stories.

Milford Sound Adventure

Upon reaching Milford Sound, embark on a 1hr 45min nature cruise with Cruise Milford that takes you beneath the towering peaks of the fjord. This small boat cruise, accompanied by a knowledgeable onboard nature guide, allows you to explore the edges of the fjord, revealing its impressive waterfalls and unique wildlife, which may include dolphins, penguins, fur seals, and native birdlife.

The Journey Back

After your cruise, rejoin the van to commence the return journey to Queenstown. Sit back, relax, and take in the views. This day tour spans approximately 12-13 hours, and our smaller vehicles and attentive guide.

6 December - Drive to Lake Wanaka

09:30 Collect hire car (G MITSUBISHI ASX or similar) from downtown Queenstown. (office located 800m from your accommodation) and drive to Lake Wanaka. Approx. 70 KM by most direct route a little over an hour’s drive. Rest of the day at leisure.

Your accommodation is at the Bella Vista Motel Lake Wanaka

From Queenstown, you can simply follow the main road through the Kawarau Gorge to Lake Dunstan, and north around the Pisa Range to Wanaka. Alternatively, just beyond the turning to Arrowtown is the turning for the Crown Range Road on the left. This climbs steeply up into the Crown Range, giving you superb views back over the valley, with the Remarkables as a backdrop. The road follows the Cardrona River to Cardrona Township, where you can stop for a drink at the historic Cardrona Hotel before reaching Lake Wanaka. This is a shorter and much more scenic route (approximately 70 kilometres, 1 hour, 30 minutes).

Sitting on the shore of Lake Wanaka and hula-hooped by the snow-dusted Southern Alps, Wanaka greets outdoorsy life with gusto. Another ace up the town’s sleeve is its closeness to Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of beech forests, rugged rock faces, river valleys, and alpine lakes that open themselves up to plenty of water- and mountain-based activities.

07 December - Drive to Franz Josef Glacier

In your hire car drive Franz Josef Glacier. Approx. 290 KM – approx. time 4 hours without stops. Your accommodation is at the Aspen Court Franz Josef Motel

Head north along the shores of Lake Hawea before following the banks of Lake Wanaka, which mirrors the Minaret Mountains towering above it. Heading up into the Makarora Forest the road follows the Makarora River through a spectacular alpine valley before tracking the course of the Haast River and turning west towards the coast through the Haast Pass. This journey passes many impressive waterfalls not far from the road. After cutting through the Southern Alps the road reaches the small village of Haast and heads north along the rugged west coast before heading inland at Knights Point, through the Paringa Forest and passed Lake Paringa. Once you have passed Jacobs River and Karangarua it is only a short way to Fox Glacier. You might like to take a short detour here to Lake Matheson signposted off to the left before continuing along the very windy road to Franz Josef (approximately 287 kilometres; six hours).

08 December - Franz Josef Glacier helicopter tour

Shared excursion (maximum size group 11 persons) on Franz Josef Heli Hike including guide. Time to be confirmed – at the time of writing 12.30, 12.45, 1300 & 13.15 slots available.

Today, you will go and explore the Franz Josef Glacier by taking a helicopter to the glacier, where you will land and have about two and a half hours to explore the rugged terrain. The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are two of the fastest moving in the world, sometimes at a rate of up to 20 m (66 ft) a year. This means that the terrain is ever-changing as crevasses close and new ones open. As your guide leads you on a route, you’ll see ice tunnels glowing a deep blue shade and steps up the ice have to be hewn with a pickaxe. You’ll have up to two hours of time to explore the glacier and your guide will tailor the walking and experience to fit your group. Please note that you’ll be required to complete a short step test prior to the heli-hike in order to gauge fitness levels.

09 December - Drive to Greymouth

In your hire car drive to your hotel in Greymouth Approx. 180 KM – approx. time 2.5 hours without stops. Drop off your luggage at your hotel and then take your hire car to car hire outlet in downtown Greymouth, approximately 8-minute walk from your hotel. Your accommodation is at the The Copthorne Hotel Greymouth

Heading north out of Fox or Franz Josef Glacier townships, you will soon be driving through the corridors of rimu and matai forests in the Waitaha and Kakapotahi scenic reserves. You will pass Ross, well known locally as the centre of the Ross Historic Goldfields, and then later the charming town of Hokitika. In this quaint port town, you will find the excellent Jade Museum and the William Steyn Gallery as well as numerous little cafés in which to take a break from the driving. Continuing north along the coast you cross the Taramakau River and reach the town of Greymouth (approximately 177 kilometres, three hours).
